New Experience Point - Escalation
I am adding a new way to gain Experience Points to the roster – Escalation. It is similar to Plot Leadership, but more concrete and something you can ask for directly instead of waiting for someone to nominate you. You gain an experience point if, at the game, you actively escalate a plot, relationship, or conflict. This is to encourage proactive and dynamic play, and to urge players to “take it to the next level”. To get the point, tell me what you escalated and how in your usual downtime email. Examples might be “I declared my undying love to Fred, so we went from friends to lover”, or “I unveiled the secret plans of my Cabal, moving our plot from quiet treachery to outright rebellion!” I need to know where the plot/relationship/conflict was, and where it went to, because you only get the point for escalating things, not just dwelling in them. Telling me “I don’t like John, I stabbed him in the back” isn’t good enough…if you tell me “I openly stabbed John in the back, taking us from rivals to hated foes” I then know that in order for you to escalate again, you’ve gotta step it up beyond the hated foe level. Lastly, the escalation has to be something done by you at the game. You don’t get the point for being the recipient of things other people do(although you might if you react in turn), and you don’t get the point for stuff that happens in downtime or a sidescene(unless you can find a way to take those events and escalate stuff in game). Yes, this rewards active, motivated characters more than it does passive ones. I’m alright with that – driven, dramatic characters should advance faster, although they’ll probably burn out faster too. The intent here is to reward players who make things happen at the game itself.
