U of S protest targets board’s alleged secrecy

Hundreds attended a rally Friday on the U of S Campus

Hundreds of students, staff and union leaders staged a noisy rally outside an administration building on the University of Saskatchewan campus Friday to protest tuition hikes, unresolved labour disputes and allegations of secrecy against the university's board of governors.

“The people's university has been thrown out and replaced by the corporate university, and in order to see that transformation you only have to look at the board of governors,” shouted faculty association president Tracy Marchant, pointing at the building where a meeting of the board was underway.

“It refuses to make its business public. It communicates to the people it serves through press releases. It does not allow individuals from campus to meet with it or make presentations in person. You must have a special pass to get in that room.” Faculty, sessional lecturers, support staff and other campus workers represented by four different unions -- all of them in the process of negotiating new contracts -- called on their employer to demand more financial support from the province to pay for wage increases without increasing tuition.

Glenn Ross, president of CUPE local 1975 told the crowd his union requested a meeting with the board of governors to submit a wage proposal and was turned away.

Suspicious Death under Investigation

What is a Juggalo?

Fans of obscure Detroit band a growing movement

ICP’s leader singer Violent J sprays Faygo over his audience

If  you’ve spent any time around the high schools and teenage hangouts on Saskatoon’s west side, you’ve probably seen them – teenager and young adults sporting what looks like clown apparel, and clothes bearing the mark of Detroit band “Insane Clown Posse”, or ICP.

The kids are juggalos -- devotees in the cult of Insane Clown Posse, a pair of white-boy rappers from suburban Detroit who've earned hero status with self-identified outcasts the world over through hyper-violent lyrics and over-the-top stage shows.  The group's status comes despite -- or maybe because of -- receiving almost no video airplay and almost no major-label backing. ICP fans say they are united by their outsider status and loving acceptance of one another. They call their fandom a family.

Call it shtick, call it a gimmick -- many do. The group, begun in 1990, calls its violent, circus imagery the "dark carnival." The term "juggalo" comes from Violent J's early juggler persona. Six of ICP's 19 albums and EPs are known as "joker cards" and are supposed to reveal some greater truth about the world to juggalos and anyone else who listens.

With lyrics such as "What is a juggalo? He just don't care, he might try to put a weave in his nut hair," and song titles like "I Stuck Her With My Wang" and "I Stab People," it's understandable that Insane Clown Posse could have something of a public-relations problem. And some violent criminals -- a Massachusetts teen attacking patrons of a gay bar in February, and a gang of kids in face paint mugging people in Seattle -- have ascribed their own violent impulses at least partially to the band, which doesn't help the public perception.        See Juggalo Faith/E2

Police continue search for cop killer

Police have few leads, but are determined to find the slayer of Constable Edward Schult, who was killed last month while on patrol in Riversdale.

Police are speaking with everyone who may have potentially witnesses anything the night of the murder.  Of particular interest is a group of three individuals that police say were at the crime scene shortly after the killing.  Although not suspects in the murder itself, police are urging anyone who may have seen anything to come forward.
