Roughriders secure first home playoff since 1988

Kerry Joseph celebrates a touchdown earlier this season.

A protracted drought ended for the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday night when the team secured its first CFL home playoff game since 1988.

"The fans have been wanting it for a long time," said Roughriders quarterback Kerry Joseph, who is preparing for Sunday's sold-out home date with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1 p.m., on Taylor Field).

"You can feel that this province has really been looking for it.''

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers' 27-13 victory over the Calgary Stampeders made it impossible for Saskatchewan to finish any lower than second in the West Division.

The second-place team is to play host to the West semifinal Nov. 11. The top seed receives a first-round playoff bye and stages the division final Nov. 18. Saskatchewan, which has a 10-5-0 record and 20 points, is three points behind the B.C. Lions (11-3-1) in the West standings.

Although the Roughriders are assured of playing at home, they are unwilling to settle for second. But the certainty of such a finish, as a minimum, has created excitement in the Rider Nation. See Roughriders/ D3

Contender for world’s worst criminal

SASKATOON - Life would be a lot easier if all criminals were so agreeable.

According to Saskatoon police, a lone male entered the Mac's convenience store on the corner of Ruth Street and Lorne Avenue around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday. He demanded money and brandished a bread knife.

The clerk thought it was a joke and told him to leave, which the would-be crook did immediately.

Police were notified of the incident while it was still in progress and when they arrived, the bumbling thief was already gone.

Despite problems, Traffic Bridge celebration a success

SASKATOON – It started with a disruption to City Council’s September 17th meeting.  A local mentally challenged man burst into council chambers, trying to convince the councilors of the need to hold a “birthday party” for the city on October 12th – the anniversary for the opening of the traffic bridge.

Touched by the disabled man’s efforts and sincerity, city council voted in favor of closing the Traffic Bridge October 12th for a Community Building Celebration Commemorating the Construction of the Traffic Bridge.

The celebration October 12th was extremely well attended, with a performance by local singer and national sensation Theresa Sokyrka.

Police reported some problems containing the crowd, which they attributed to attempt by a local youth gang  and their vocal leader “the Necrofessor” to disrupt the community celebration.  In the end, Saskatoon Police managed to control the situation, and the celebration was a wholesome event enjoyed by all.

Unusual homicide puzzles police

SASKATOON -- Saskatoon Police are investigating a mysterious death that occurred at University Hospital earlier in the month.

25 year old Fiona Rosch was found dead from wounds in her side, wrists, and ankles.  She bled out before her predicament was noticed and action could be taken.  The death has been ruled a homicide.

Rosch had been in a coma for several months.  She came into the hospital as the victim of a still unsolved assault.

Saskatoon Police are investigating, and have said the death is most likely linked to the original assault that landed Rosch in the hospital.

Some local religious figures are voicing other possibilities – the wounds that killed Rosch seem typical of so-called “stigmata”, wounds that mimic those Christ is said to have suffered on the cross.

Despite not yet determining how Rosch suffered her fatal wounds, Detective Sergeant Etwatski of the Saskatoon Police service was quoted as saying “This stigmata rubbish is just that – rubbish.”
